This revolutionary technology combines the cross-sectional imaging of a CT scanner with a very sophisticated form of intensity-modulated radiotherapy (IMRT). By combining treatment planning, image-guided patient positioning and radiation delivery into one integrated system, clinicians are able to deliver precise and effective treatments almost anywhere in the body.

During treatment delivery, the linear accelerator inside the unit rotates 360 degrees while the treatment table slowly advances the patient through the machine. This spiral (or helical) motion offers the clinician many directional angles and choices as to when to turn the radiation beam on and off. Concurrently, healthy tissues and organs are avoided during this process so that an optimal amount of radiation is only delivered to the tumor. With TomoTherapy, physicians can also adjust the size, shape, and intensity of the radiation beam to match the contour of the tumor.
